A question I get about the Keto diet is what can I eat for breakfast other than eggs, and though I love eggs and am rarely not in the mood, I get it. One of my favorite breakfasts that don’t involve meat and eggs has always been bagel and lox. The salty briny flavor of salmon combined with the rich cream cheese are just the perfect pair. Add in some spicy horseradish, chives and every bagel seasoning and what else could you ask for. Maybe a slice of tomato but I’ll leave that up to you. As a chef with years of experience I just assume everyone can cook tasty meals at the drop of a hat. I’ve come to realize that in this busy world some people have neither the time or the energy to prepare a healthy meal. This is a recipe that requires no cooking experience and just a few minutes of your time. You can keep these tasty fat bombs in the fridge and grab as needed.
The store bought seasoning is too salty!!!
One thing I’ll say is that the trader joe everything bagel seasoning can be a bit on the salty side especially if you’re sensitive to sodium or you’re using the bottom of the container where most of the salt settles. My solution is to make your own, it’s incredibly simple and that way you can control the amount of salt in your seasoning blend. I posted a quick recipe below if you want to make your own everything seasoning. You’ll notice that I mention substituting Old Bay for the salt as an option. Im from Maryland and its pretty much a requirement to use old bay as often as possible lol.
Homemade Everything Seasoning:
2 tbsp black & white sesame seeds
1 tbsp poppy seeds
2 tbsp dried minced garlic
2 tbsp dried minced onion
1 tsp coarse sea salt
(or use old bay instead of salt if you’re from the east coast)
Combine all ingredients and store in an airtight container
- Warm up cream cheese in the microwave until soft about 1 minute to 90 seconds, next chop smoked salmon to desired size then add to bowl with softened cream cheese.
- Chop chives and add remaining ingredients to bowl. mix until smooth and fully combined. then chill for 30 minutes
- using a small 2oz scoop to portion out the cream cheese mixture, roll fat bombs into small golf balls size portions and then roll in everything seasoning. before placing on a plate to chill.
- place completed fat bombs in the refrigerator for 30 minutes and then can be stored for up to one week in a sealed container.
