This Keto Beef Lo Mein is a recipe you will crave. It’s the closest you’ll ever get to real lo mein without the carbs. Hearts of Palm are a fantastic substitute for egg noodles along with tender thinly sliced sirloin. You don’t need to have your favorite Chinese dish delivered when you can make it healthy at home!!
Keto Beef Lo Mein for the Win!!
Beef Lo Mein is part of the Mount Rushmore of Chinese takeout classics along with Kung Pao Beef, General Tso Chicken and Fried Rice. I could never choose so I’d always order one of each from my favorite delivery place. I had this ritual where I would always put my lo Mein in the fridge and eat it cold for breakfast the next day. I’m well aware that this may sound strange but if you met me you’d understand.
This ketofied version takes all the same flavors but using hearts of palm noodles instead of traditional egg noodles I can have my lo mein and eat it too. Nowadays when I make this recipe I have some for dinner and then pack up the rest in glass meal prep containers to have the next day for lunch…or breakfast!
Hearts of Palm vs. Konjac Noodles
Hearts of Palm Noodles are a fairly new product that I actually first heard about on “Shark Tank”. They’re simply hearts of palm that are sliced into a Linguine like pasta substitute. In the past I haven’t been a fan of hearts of palm so I was skeptical when I saw this new product. Surprisingly a quick rinse with cold water leaves the hearts of palm almost completely flavorless and ready to absorb all the other ingredients of the recipe.
Miracle Noodle also has a hearts of palm noodles that’s very good or you can also use their Angel Hair Konjac Noodles in this recipe as well. Both products are tasty and it really comes down to personal preference. If you’re looking for basically zero carbs and calories the konjac noodles are your best bet. hearts of Palm Noodles have about 4 net carbs per serving which is great for me but I know some really want to minimize carbs.
What type of beef is best for Beef Lo Mein
I chose to use sirloin for my beef lo mein but you have many options for this recipe. you could definitely use higher end cuts like strip steak or tenderloin but sirloin is a quality cut that won’t break the bank. You can even use ground beef in this recipe if you don’t have ant steak on hand. Other cuts Like flank, London broil or chuck are good as well but make sure you slice the steak as thin as possible and cut against the grain. to make slicing the steak easier put the steak in the freezer for 20 minutes. this will tighten up the meat making it easier and safer to slice thin.
Can I substitute Chicken for Beef??
If you don’t eat red meat (for whatever reason) you can substitute any other protein you prefer. Chicken, shrimp and pork are also great options for this recipe. You can also get even more bold and use a mixture of different meats. If you order the House Special Lo Mein at a restaurant normally you get a combination of beef, shrimp and pork.
If meat isn’t your thing (insert eye roll emoji) you can load up on veggies in your lo Mein. Sliced Carrots, Broccoli,peppers, onions, jalapeño, bamboo shoots, baby corn and mushrooms are all great additions to you lo Mein whether you add a protein or not. Adding veggies is a great way to bulk up the dish. The trade off is you will be adding some carbs to the total. I chose to keep this recipe simple but feel free to load up with the ingredients you enjoy and fit your macros.

- Thinly slice beef into strips then marinate with soy, allulose, sriracha, sesame oil and garlic. you can marinate overnight or at minimum 30 minutes
- heat up a pan with avocado oil and add sirloin leaving as much of the marinate still in the container for later. saute the beef until it begins to carmelize (about 3-5 minutes). Next add the drained hearts of palm noodles, the remaining marinade and half of the scallions. continue cooking until most of the sauce has absorbed into the noodles. if the sauce is watery you can tighten it up with a 1/2 tsp of Xanthan gum. if the sauce seems to dry add an extra tablespoon of soy and a dash of sesame oil.
- Garnish with a fried egg sesame seeds and cilantro. I like to serve with a lime wedge as well.
